October Offerings...

"Autumn arrives, array'd in splendid mein;
Vines, cluster'd full, add to the beauteous scene,
And fruit-trees cloth'd profusely laden, nod,
Compliant bowing to the fertile sod."

~ Farmer's Almanac, 1818~

Crazy Quilt Make-do Pincushion

Just a terrific old pincushion made from a bit of crazy quilt mounted on a glass base.  Fabrics are worn and faded velvets and silks with a length of olive green skirting going all around.  One section of the velvet quilt top is missing (see first photo), exposing a cream silk fabric underneath.  A few tiny holes in that bit of silk show that the pincushion is stuffed with old batting.  Wonderful autumnal colors!  The old glass base has bubbles and some little chips and nicks.  I spy at least one old steel pin stuck in the top.  Measures 4.5”h x 5”w.

Antique Sampler: Mary Milne 1822

Very sweet linen and silk sampler worked by Mary Milne in 1822.  The top half is stitched with rows of alphabet, numbers, and border patterns.  The bottom half features a central floral basket flanked by little dogs and more floral motifs.  A bird is perched on one of the flowering plants.  Mary worked her name, age, and date along the bottom.  The colors of the silk threads are primarily green, rust, gold, salmon, and plum.  The linen remains in very good condition with minimal thread loss.  The sampler measures 12.75”w x 12”h.  This sampler has not been reproduced.

Antique Sampler: Elisabeth Harris 1785

Beautiful 18th century sampler worked by Elisabeth Harris, dated November 8 1785.  Worked in silks, Miss Harris’ sampler includes your typical alphabet and number set.  She has worked a lovely, large floral motif in the center with hearts and birds on branches on either side.  The verse reads: Modest Virtue it is said to be the glory of a maid” followed by “Elisabeth Harris Her Sampler Wrought in the 14 year of her age November 8th 1785.”  A strawberry border enclosed the whole.  There is some staining, as can be seen in the photos, as well as one very small hole above the “d” in maid.  Some bleeding of  the green threads on the back of the sampler, but this is barely visible on the front.  I have not researched Elisabeth Harris, nor have I reproduced this sampler.  A beautiful piece worked in a palette of gold, cream, green, and plum.  The plum threads used to work her name and details have faded to a silvery gray on the front.  It measures 13.5”h x 8.75”w.  My photos do not do this beauty justice!!
